Search ended in earthquake-hit Herat as death toll hits new heights

KABUL (SW) – Officials of the Afghan Red Crescent Society say that search and rescue operations have ended in the earthquake-hit areas of Herat as the death toll hits new heights.

According to the officials of the ARCS, more than 2,400 people died in this earthquake and hundreds of others were injured.

They also added that 13 villages in different areas of Herat were completely destroyed in Saturday’s earthquake.

The spokesperson of the Afghan Red Crescent Society, Irfanullah Sharafzoi, told Salam Watandar: “On the first and second day, we had 14 teams, seven of which were rescue teams and seven were medical teams. 16 other teams were also sent there from other provinces. Now in Herat, The rescue operation has ended and the head of the Afghan Red Crescent Society is in the area and is organizing the affairs.”

According to Sharafzoi, operations are still ongoing in some areas. He added that the operation was successfully completed and according to him, no one remained under the soil.

According to the information of the Afghan Red Crescent Society, the number of people who have died in this earthquake has exceeded 2400 people.

At the same time, several earthquakes aftershocks have occurred in this province after the first bloody earthquake.

On Monday, the earthquake occurred in Herat again. So far, there is no information about the damage caused by the aftershocks.

It is said that the epicenter of the said earthquake was Rabat Sangi district and the tremors of the earthquake were felt within ten kilometers of the district.
