Herat earthquake survivors anxious about the harsh winter

HERAT (SW) – The victims of the earthquake in Zindajan district of Herat say that with the approach of winter, it is difficult for them to spend the cold nights under the tent and they ask the caretaker government to provide them with suitable shelter as soon as possible and take care of their situation.

Mir Ahmad, one of the victims of the earthquake in “Naib Rafi” village of Zindajan district, urged the authorities to take immediate care of his and his family’s situation. Mir Ahmad said: “I request the government to build a place for us so that at least our children can be in a warm place, winter is near and the region has become cold.”

Similarly, the residents of Wardakhai village of Zindajan district say that this area gets very cold as winter approaches and if they do not have proper shelter, they will lose their children due to the cold.

Bismillah, a resident of this village, said: “Food, blankets and tents have arrived, but for now we need a place to shelter in winter. There were 1060 people in this village, all the houses were levelled and destroyed in the first earthquake.”

Meanwhile, the officials of the Islamic Emirate say that they will build standard houses for the victims of the earthquake in Zindajan district of Herat.

Abdul Ghani Baradar, the economic deputy of the Prime Minister’s Office, has said: “We have used all the possibilities all night to save the people who have suffered. All relevant institutions and ministries are busy to deliver urgent aid to them and we saw that they had delivered the aid. They have built a temporary shelter for them; such as tents, tarpaulins and other objects. The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, God willing, is committed to this, it will repair and rebuild the destroyed houses, which number up to 1,500.”

Recently, Germany has donated five million euros, China has donated 200 million US dollars, the “King Salman” charity organization in Saudi Arabia has donated food and non-food items worth two million dollars, and Iran and Turkey have also helped the victims of the earthquake in Herat.

Abdul Salam Barakzai, financial and administrative director of Herat Natural Disaster Management Department, told Salam Watandar that search and rescue operations are underway in Zindajan district.

According to the information of the local authorities in Herat, as a result of the earthquake, more than 2445 people have died and 2440 people have been injured, and the residential houses of all 13 villages in Zindajan district have been completely destroyed and hundreds of other houses have been damaged in other areas.
