Afghanistan appeals for urgent help as earthquake in Herat claims thousands of lives

KABUL (SW) – A day after the deadly earthquake in Zindajan district of Herat, Afghanistan has appealed international community for urgent rescue and relief.

Din Mohammad Hanif, acting head of the ministry of economy, has asked the representatives of domestic and foreign aid institutions to help the victims of the earthquake in Herat.

According to the acting minister of economy, domestic and foreign institutions should prioritize helping the earthquake victims in Herat. Din Mohammad Hanif added: “We assure the grieving and suffering people of Herat that the Islamic Emirate and the Ministry of Economy present in this gathering, which includes representatives of domestic and foreign institutions, share your grief and are by your side.”

Meanwhile, the representatives of foreign aid institutions who attended the meeting showed their readiness to send aid to the victims of the earthquake in Herat and assured that they will do their best to help the victims.

Mrs. Hana, the representative of the United Nations Emergency Aid Department, said in this meeting: “We are a strong team that is moving forward with the coordination of OCHA and other similar organizations. In terms of providing food, first aid and other aid, we will take care of the injured using the zones we have in Herat.”

Ginit Rajes, the representative of the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Aid (OCHA) in Afghanistan, also said: “Last night, we coordinated the teams to help the earthquake victims and we are in a hurry to provide assistance to the victims. We are doing our best to coordinate with other agencies and send emergency aid.”

On the other hand, a number of domestic aid institutions also promised that they will try to help the victims of the earthquake in Herat yesterday.

Abdul Bashir Sakhizada, the chief physician of the Afghan-French hospital in Kabul, said that the hospital is ready to treat patients who need urgent care.

He added: “We are fully prepared to treat patients who cannot be treated in Herat. We are among the institutions that work in the emergency services sector, that patients who need advanced treatment and surgery, we are at our service.”

In this meeting, it was also decided to create a committee for the purpose of coordination of aid and coordination between domestic and foreign aid organizations.

According to the latest figures provided by the Ministry of Disaster Management, 2,053 people have died and been injured in the aftermath of this powerful earthquake. In addition, 1,329 residential houses have been completely destroyed.
