Ban on INGOs in education sector sparks grim concerns

KABUL (SW) – The Islamic Emirate’s move to ban the international non-governmental organisations from operating in the education sector has sparked grim concerns.

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), in response to the decision of the Ministry of Education of the Islamic Emirate to suspend the activities of international institutions in the education sector throughout the country, said more than 500,000 children, including more than 300,000 girls, may be denied access to education within a month.

Sam Moret, UNICEF’s head of communications, support and civil partnership, told Salam Watandar: “If international non-governmental organizations that work in the education sector are not allowed to operate or are handed over to national organizations, without evaluating more than 500,000 children, including more than 300,000 girls may be deprived of access to good and high-quality community-based education within a month.”

The head of UNICEF’s communication, support and civil partnership department urged the Islamic Emirate to assure international organizations that learning is the right of every child.

A source in the Ministry of Education cconfirmed to Salam Watandar that since yesterday, the activity of international institutions in the field of education throughout the country has been stopped by this Ministry.

The source says that a one-month deadline has been given for the activities of international institutions in the education sector, so that they can implement their projects in Afghanistan through domestic institutions. The source added the international institutions are ordered to implement their projects in Afghanistan in agreement with the Ministry of Education.
