“Women and girls be allowed back to work and studies”

KABUL (SW) – Gillian Triggs, UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Protection has called for women and girls to be allowed back to work and studies in Afghanistan.

During a visit to Kabul, she emphasized the continuation of the process of humanitarian aid in Afghanistan. She added that the provision of this aid is separate from political issues.

She called the return of women to their jobs as a vital matter and asked the Islamic Emirate authorities to allow them to work so that the provision of humanitarian aid and the examination of the challenges of the displaced can proceed properly and better.

“The United Nations High Commission is committed to providing its humanitarian services, and we try to keep these assistance separate from political issues, but the clear issue is that the return of women to the offices of the United Nations is a vital matter.”

On the other hand, Mohammad Arsalah Kharouti, Minister of Finance and Administration and Acting Minister of Migrants and Returnees Affairs, welcomed her visit and asked her to increase humanitarian aid to the citizens of Afghanistan. He said that these aids should be provided to the citizens in a real sense and the distribution process should not be influenced by political issues.

He aadded “Our wish is that they pursue the goal and process of humanitarian aid in the real and original sense, and the issue of aid should not be related to political issues.”

Mr. Khoruti also added that the citizens of Afghanistan have been facing serious problems in the past years and emphasized that the international community is also responsible for solving their problems.

This comes as the Islamic Emirate has banned women from working in the offices of the United Nations, which has caused global reactions, especially by the United Nations.
