UNHCR promises residential units for cave dwellers in Bamyan

BAMYAN (SW) – Gillian Triggs, the deputy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, has traveled to Bamyan at the head of a high-ranking delegation to assess the situation.

In a meeting with Abdullah Sarhadhi, the governor of Bamyan, she discussed about migrants and displaced persons and women’s issues. The deputy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees has said that land will be distributed for migrants and cave dwellers in Bamyan, and residential houses with water and electricity facilities will also be built for them.

In this meeting, the governor of Bamyan mentioned the activity of the women’s market in Bamyan city and said that the “art market” in the center of Bamyan city is special for women, where business women sell their handicrafts. He has asked the high-level delegation of the United Nations to give attention and financial support to the growth and marketing of the women’s market in Bamyan.

The governor of Bamyan has also shared the problems of the farmers of this province with the United Nations high-level delegation and has requested the United Nations and international institutions to create standard potato reserves and distribute agricultural modified seeds and implement development projects to support the farmers of Bamyan.

On the other hand, Christoph Pertman, a senior deputy in the executive affairs of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for Afghanistan, welcomed the proposals. He added that building standard cold storage facilities, distributing modified seeds and supporting the women’s bazaar would be considered.

Ashraf Niazi, head of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees office in Bamyan, told the media that the organization is building settlements for 144 cave-dwelling families in this province. According to him, this settlement on the area of 60 acres of land was given by the Department of Immigrants and Returnees for the purpose of building houses for cave dwellers.
