KABUL (SW) – Exploiting the needs of desperate citizens, black marketing continues of the passports as official distributions of the travel documents remain suspended.

It has been several months that the passport distribution process has been stopped in Kabul and provinces.

Meanwhile, a number of citizens complaining about the suspension of the passport distribution process, say that passports are sold in the black market at an exorbitant cost. They add that the commission agents sell the passport from 1000 to 2000 US dollars.

Eliyas, a resident of Kabul, said in this regard: “Unless you pay, you cannot get a passport. The price of a passport in the black market is 10 times its fixed rate, which has now reached 2000 to 3000 US dollars, and people cannot afford to buy a passport at a higher cost. We want the process of passport distribution to resume.”

Mansour, another resident of Kabul, said in this regard: “We registered before Ramadan, two months ago it was our turn and we went for the biometrics. This process has been stopped. Commission agents sell passports for up to 1,700 dollars.”

However, the officials of the General Directorate of Passports of the Ministry of Interior rejected the sale of passports in black markets, saying that the passports that are sold in the markets are fake as the passports are only distributed to patients, athletes and businessmen.

“Transparency has been ensured in the passport distribution process and we are trying to further improve it”, said the Directorate spokesman Noorullah Patman.

Following the re-establishment of the Islamic Emirate, the demand for passports has increased among citizens.
