Unprecedented cold wave proves deadly for 45 people in 5 provinces

KABUL (SW) – An unprecedented wave of harsh winter wave has claimed at least 45 lives in five provinces.

In a situation where a large part of the country’s population has to choose between food and heating their homes, the unprecedented drop in temperature has put them in a difficult situation.

Mahmoud, a resident of Takhar, is under the threat of cold weather. He, who is among 30 families who recently lost their homes due to a mountain slide and became homeless, says: “When it was freezing, we woke up in the morning and headed towards the mosque, suddenly we realized that the water from the bridge has surged, we were very worried, we saw that we were going to be under water, we took the children and the family and left the house and our house was destroyed.”

Among those who died due to cold, the highest number was reported from Nimroz province. One of the local officials of Nimroz confirmed to Salam Watandar that so far, 27 people have died due to the cold in this province.

Similarly, Sediqullah Seddiqi, the spokesman of the Badghis Police Command, said: “Unfortunately, we have received information from the two districts of Moqar and Qadis that five people have died in these two districts.”

Sefatullah, a resident of Balamorghab district of Badghis, told Salam Watandar: “Two children, one boy and one girl, died from the cold in a village in Balamorghab, and a woman from another village also died in the cold in these few days.”

Meanwhile, officials of the Ministry of Disaster Management, while announcing efforts to deal with the situation, said that the available aid is not enough to help all those in need.

Shafiullah Rahimi, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Disaster Management, says that the ministry is facing a lack of funds.

Meanwhile, the weather in the coming week is predicted to be cold in all parts of the country that will put poor citizens in a more difficult situation.
