Spike in burglaries causes grim concerns

KABUL (SW) – An evident spike in armed burglaries have caused grim concerns among Kabul residents.

“I live in Shahr-e-Nau, one day armed men riding a motor cycle stopped us on gun point and took away all of our valuables”, these are the words of Rouya Kosha, a resident of Kabul, who was recently targeted by armed robbers. Thieves took his money and phone with them by force of gun.

“While there were many people in the street, they did not intervene due to the fear of getting hurt”.

Similarly, Kamel Esmati, another resident of Kabul who lives in Khair Khana, said when he was going home at night, he encountered armed robbers who stabbed me several times, took my money and left the area.

Kosha and Asmati are not the only residents of Kabul who have been victims of armed robberies.

Every day, a number of residents of the capital in different areas of the city, on the public road and in the back alleys, face thieves who are ready to take their lives to get a mobile phone and a few afghanis.

A number of Kabul residents, complaining about the increase in armed robberies in the city, say that armed robbers are roaming around the city on motorcycles.

Nowroz Ali, one of the residents of the west of Kabul, who was also targeted by armed robbers, said that when he was going home from the office, he encountered two armed robbers in one of the alleys of Dasht Barchi.

“They asked me to give  away all the valuables I had to them.”

However, the Ministry of Interior says that dozens of people are arrested daily in the capital by the Ministry’s security forces on charges of committing various crimes.

Basmullah Habib, the deputy spokesman of the ministry, said: “Every day, dozens of people are arrested and handed over to judicial institutions, especially in armed robberies, from different areas of the city. We ask people to cooperate with the Ministry of Interior.”

Armed robberies in the city of Kabul have been one of the most serious challenge for several years now. So that there are fewer residents of the urban parts of Kabul who have not been the target of armed robbery, and some have even had this experience more than once.
