Pneumonia rising across Afghanistan, warns health officials

KABUL (SW) – The number of children suffering from pneumonia has increased and every month, eight to 10 children die of this disease in Kabul, said health officials.

Iqbal Sadeq, the head doctor at the Indragandi Children’s hospital, told Salam Watandar that in the last two months, more than 5 thousand people have visited this hospital due to pneumonia, and every month, eight to 10 people died of pneumonia.

Fatema, a resident of Kabul, who brought her child for treatment, said that in the past month, her child has had pneumonia many times.

The officials said malnutrition, lack of vaccination in childhood, change of season and late visit to the doctor are the main causes of pneumonia in children. He asked families to provide food and warm clothes for their children in these cold days.
