International community urged to help Afghanistan amid devastating floods

KABUL (SW) – Mohammad Nasim Haqqani, the spokesperson of the Ministry of Disaster Management, says that the recent rains and floods in the provinces of Ghazni, Maidan Wardak, Paktia, Paktika, Logar and Khost have caused huge financial losses to the people.

He added that survey teams are still working in the affected areas, but according to the initial statistics, people’s houses, farms and gardens have been destroyed.

The spokesperson of the Ministry of Disaster Management said that this ministry is not able to reach the victims and asks the international community to help the flood victims.

“Many damages have been inflicted upon the people and it is beyond our ability to reach the victims. We provide food and non-food items, but the provinces ask for help from international institutions and they also help.”

Meanwhile, Misbahuddin Mustain, the spokesman of the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation and Livestock, has said that the recent rains and floods affected three districts in Paktika, four districts in Ghazni, three districts in Maidan Wardak, three districts in Logar and four districts in Zabul and Paktia provinces and have caused damage.

He added that they are working to restore and clean the water networks. “Floods have caused damage, in some districts they have taken people’s lands, in some districts they have destroyed wood, livestock, wheat and people’s houses.”

The officials of Logar Agriculture Department say that as a result of heavy rains and floods in Pul Alam city and Charkh, Kharwar, Khushi and Mohammad Agha districts of this province, about 700 acres of arable land has been destroyed.

Floods in Ghazni Province have killed two children and injured three others in addition to financial losses.

Omar Haqqani, head of natural disasters in Ghazni Province, says that rains and floods in different districts of this province have destroyed hundreds of acres of agricultural land and destroyed hundreds of livestock.

On the other hand, Zabihullah Torabi, Sheikh Ali district governor of Parwan province, also says that as a result of the floods in this district, one person was killed and more than 100 livestock were lost.

According to the forecast of the country’s Meteorological Department, rain and floods will continue in 10 provinces of the country today.
