Mother’s Day: Afghan women say their plight has worsened

KABUL (SW) – This year on Mother’s Day, Afghan women say their plight has worsened amid uncertain political and dreadful economic circumstances across the country.

The 24 of Jawza in Afghanistan’s Solar Hijri calendar is marked as the Mother’s Day, but this year the country has witnessed this day as the challenges faced by the women have increased more than ever.

Marzia, a mother of seven, told Salam Watutandar that she has been working outside the home with many problems for more than a decade to provide education for her children.

Marzia, whose three daughters have obtained higher education and whose other children are also receiving education, expressed concern about the current situation in Afghanistan and said that the challenges facing her daughters’ education are worrying.

“When we were young, there was no education, I am very sorry that I was illiterate, now the closure of schools worries girls and I do not want other girls to be illiterate like me,” she added.

Forouzan Khalilyar is another mother who is worried about the current situation in Afghanistan. She, who is also a women’s rights activist, says the persistence of approaches to exclude women from society will have a negative impact on the future of the country’s girls.

According to Ms Khalilyar, Afghan women and mothers are the main victims of the latest developments in the country.
