Ruling on hijab creates new hurdles for female public servants

KABUL (SW) – The new ruling on hijab for women has created additional problems for female public servants, Salam Watandar has learnt.

The new Islamic Emirate decree requiring women to observe the hijab and cover their faces has raised fears and concerns among female government employees and female students.

A number of female public servants say that although they observe the hijab correctly, they are afraid of the reaction of the forces of the Islamic Emirate and the forces of the Ministry of Enjoining the Good and Forbidding the Evil. They emphasized that the imposition of such restrictions disrupts their work process and negatively affects their morale.

Diba Faramarz, a government employee, told Salam Watandar: “It has become a concern that does not calm me down mentally. It even has a negative effect on my work and duties and does not allow me to do well”.

On the other hand, a number of female students say that the imposition of hijab has had a negative effect on them and has shown them that the Islamic Emirate is not committed to its claims to respect the rights of women in Afghanistan. They added that the Islamic Emirate seeks to force women to stay home and prevent their growth and activities outside the home.

Maryam Moradi, one of the students, said: “It has made us discouraged from our lessons and we are not interested in lessons now. The family still does not allow us to come and continue our studies and we are told not to study.”

It should be noted that the exclusion of women from politics, the banning of female students from the sixth grade onwards from going to school, the restriction of women working in government offices, the ban on women and girls traveling without male family members, and the recent imposition of hijab are some of the restrictions imposed on women after the Islamic Emirate took office back in August.
