Religious scholars call for reopening of girls’ schools

KABUL (SW) – A number of religious scholars on Thursday criticized the closure of secondary schools and high schools for girls, saying that this was harming the image of Islam.

Addressing a gathering in this connection, they said that the Islamic Emirate’s decision to close girls’ schools has no religious or rational justification. Religious scholars called on the Islamic Emirate not to hinder the education of girls any more.

Somaya Shafiq, a religious scholar and university professor, said that closing schools to girls above the sixth grade will do great damage to the image of Islam. According to the scholar, following the closure of schools, Western society believes that Islam has deprived girls of the right to education.

Meanwhile, Munir Ahmad Baligh, another religious scholar at the meeting, said that they do not allow any group or government to impose something that is not their right on them. He added that if the governments rule the people with oppression, it will certainly not be stable.

Religious scholars emphasized that the Islamic Emirate should no longer hinder the education of girls because this action has no religious or rational justification.

It is worth mentioning that more than 200 days have passed since the closure of girls’ schools above the sixth grade but the Islamic Emirate has not yet taken practical action to reopen the schools.
