MONITORING (SW) – Mette Knudsen, Deputy Special Representative (Political) for Afghanistan, has said the situation in the government had remained unclear since the Islamic Emirate took control of Afghanistan.
She said at the Institute of International and European Affairs on Wednesday that the major decisions of the Islamic Emirate are made not in the cabinet, but elsewhere. “Since the Islamic Emirate came to power, the state of government has remained unclear,” said Knudsen. “What we have seen is that major decisions are made not in the cabinet, but elsewhere in the structure of the Islamic Emirate.”
Regarding the closure of schools to female students, the UN Under-Secretary-General said that the long-term impact of this discriminatory measure on the literacy of future generations will be widespread and will contribute to the spread of poverty.
High schools and girls’ high schools were scheduled to reopen nationwide in the third last month after months of closure but on the same day, the Ministry of Education of the Islamic Emirate suspended the decision until further notice.
The Islamic Emirate’s decision provoked national and international reactions, and international institutions repeatedly called for the immediate opening of schools to girls above the sixth grade. The Ministry of Education, however, has said that it is waiting for the finalization of the comprehensive plan and the guidance of the leadership of the Islamic Emirate in this regard.
