Islamic Emirate unable to protect disabled persons’ rights

KABUL (SW) – People with disabilities say authorities of the Islamic Emirate have been unable to protect their rights and pay their due rights for months.

Parvin, a disabled person who lost both legs in a landmine explosion, says he is refused every time he goes to the Ministry of Martyrs and the Disabled for assistance. “I have been going to the Ministry of Martyrs and the Disabled for eight months for my salary. They tell us that you have to register. When we take our photos and documents, they tell us to wait a second time, because there is no budget.”

Samad, another disabled person, says that his family has no other breadwinner. He asks the officials of the Islamic Emirate to pay their salaries and benefits on time.

However, the Ministry of Martyrs and the Disabled blames the reason for the non-payment of disability benefits on documents and says that the process of streamlining the documents of people with disabilities is under investigation and 95% of the documents have been reviewed so far.

Shah Mohammad Dost, head of the office of the Ministry of Martyrs and the Disabled, emphasized that in the previous government, those who did not deserve it were paid via fraud and forgery.

People with disabilities have been complaining for years about not being paid their salaries on time. Rising poverty and unemployment in the country now make lives of people with disabilities even more difficult.
