Blasts in Herat claim five lives, 25 injured

HERAT CITY (SW) – Back-to-back bomb blasts in Herat province have claimed the lives of five people and injured 25 others, confirmed officials on Friday.

Local sources in Herat told Salam Watandar that an explosion took place on the Tohid 18 road in the town of Jibril in Herat on Friday evening.

Residents and witnesses to the incident say the incident took place at the crowded Sangagirk sports field and was the second of several explosions. According to sources, the site of the explosion was a Shiite neighborhood.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Aref Jalali, the chief physician of the Herat District Hospital, told Salam Watandar that four people had been killed and 25 injured in the incident and had been taken to the hospital.

On the other hand, Bakhtar state news agency reported that 5 people were killed and 20 others were injured in an explosion in the ninth district of Herat city.

Bakhtar quoted Naeem al-Haq Haqqani, director of information and culture in Herat, as saying that four bombs had been planted in a recreation area in the ninth district of Herat city.

No group or individual has claimed responsibility for the blast. The Islamic State (ISIS) group has previously claimed responsibility for similar incidents in Herat and some other provinces.
