44 killed and 1,700 injured in surging road accidents

KANDAHAR (SW) – In less than a month, 44 people, including women and children, have been killed and more than 1,700 injured due to the evidently surging road accidents. 

Findings by Salam Watandar indicate that 21 people got killed and 721 got injured in Kandahar, 18 people got killed and 657 more got injured in Herat, 3 people got killed and 11 moe got injured in Helmand, one person got killed and 15 wounded in Zabul, one person got killed and 93 others got wounded in Badghis, 124 wounded in Uruzgan, about 100 wounded in Ghor and 6 wounded in Farah province.

Local officials in these provinces said the victims of traffic accidents also included children and women. They attribute the increase in traffic incidents to underage drivers, faulty roads and ignorance towards the traffic laws.

According to the officials, although no new guidance has been given to the traffic authorities by the central authorities, they are trying to prevent the surging traffic accidents by educating the public.

Officials in these provinces are urging families not to provide their children with vehicles and to work with them to reduce traffic accidents.

According to Kandahar health officials, 3,926 people have been injured and 126 others killed in traffic accidents in this province alone in the past six months alone.
