Ghani says international recognition impossible before domestic legitimacy

KABUL (SW) – Former President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani has said that the country’s citizens are at a crossroads and that repeating past mistake, reverting to the policy of elimination and monopoly could rekindle the war in Afghanistan.

“It is easy to gain power but difficult to consolidate it,” he said in an audio message on the occasion of the nauroz, the new Solar Hijri Year 1401. Ghani stated that international and regional recognition is not possible without domestic legitimacy, and that legitimacy could only be achieved through the people.

The former president added that the citizens of Afghanistan are witnessing the new year in a difficult situation. He suggested a number of ways to get out of the current situation in Afghanistan.

Ghani added that the alternative way to empathy is true national unity and mutual acceptance in Afghanistan. “True peace can only be achieved when there is national unity and the acceptance of the principle that Afghanistan is the common home of all Afghans,” he said.

He stressed that a national consensus and dialogue should be created in the country and the human condition should be a priority on the agenda of this dialogue. Ghani also stressed on the proper use of international aid and its transparent management, and said that Afghanistan should not become a “humanitarian aid colony.”

Ghani also called Afghanistan’s stability and prosperity dependent on regional and international cooperation and stressed that Afghanistan should be neutral and should not become a battleground for different powers.

Ashraf Ghani’s new message on the situation in Afghanistan comes at a time when there have been recent reports of his return to the country. But such reports have been rejected by his former national security adviser, Hamdullah Mohib.
