Consultations for Sharia-compliant uniform for girls hinders reopening of schools

KABUL (SW) – The Islamic Emirate authorities have cited consultations for Sharia-compliant dress code for girls as the reason behind not reopening their schools across the country.

The Bakhtar state news agency reported that the Ministry of Education had issued a statement saying that all girls’ schools (secondary and high schools) would be closed until the ministry’s next order.

The statement said that if the school uniform is designed in accordance with Afghan law, customs and culture, then the corresponding schools will resume studies according to the ruling of the leadership of the Islamic Emirate.

A day earlier, the Ministry of Education had announced the opening of schools across the country for all girls from the first to the twelfth grade.

With the rise to power of the Islamic Emirate, female students over the sixth grade have not been allowed to go to school. Following the reactions of many international organizations to this action, the Islamic Emirate insisted on creating a plan in this regard.

Officials from the Ministry of Education of the Islamic Emirate had announced earlier that the plan to reopen girls’ schools had been finalized.

Aziz Ahmad Ryan, a spokesman for the Ministry of Education, told Salam Watandar that the plan to reopen girls’ schools would be sent to the cabinet for approval, and that if the plan was approved, female students from the sixth grade onward could return to their schools.

The ministry announced yesterday that all schools, colleges and other educational institutions will restart on Wednesday. The statement said that all students and teachers of schools, colleges and educational institutions should consider ‘religious and national standards’ values while returning to studies.
