Concerns raised over the plight of women journalists

KABUL (SW) – The Afghan Journalists Safety Committee has said while marking the International Women’s Day that the situation of women journalists in the country has been worrying in recent months.

According to the AJSC, in many provinces of the country, women have not yet received permission to work in the media, and the number of female journalists in the country has dropped dramatically.

The Committee added that there were more than 1,300 female media workers in the country last year, but this year the figure has dropped to less than 300.

It called on the Islamic Emirate officials to work together with the rights group to ensure that women have access to their basic rights and the female journalists are allowed to return to their media work in provinces.

The Human Rights Watch too has expressed concerns over the situation of journalists in Afghanistan, especially women journalists. The situation for journalists in the provinces is much worse than in the capital, Kabul it said.

In some provinces, the Islamic Emirate officials have not allowed female journalists to work in the media and has told them to quit, Human Rights Watch reported.

For the past six months, the Islamic Emirate has imposed restrictions on female journalists in the provinces, and in a number of other provinces, even broadcasting of women’s voices has been banned.
