Journalists not allowed to cover protest in Kandahar

KANDAHAR CITY (SW) – Journalists were not allowed to cover the protest demonstration by the friends and relatives of the woman killed in a Kandahar a day earlier by the security forces of the Islamic Emirate.

Family members and relatives of a woman who was shot dead by Islamic Emirate forces in Kandahar staged a protest in front of the governor’s office.

A number of journalists who wanted to cover the protest said that the forces of the Islamic Emirate prevented the protest from being covered and did not allow the journalists to go to the place and even threatened them.

In addition, some journalists were detained for several minutes and their belongings confiscated. It is said that these journalists were released again after the demands and efforts of the residents of the province.

Meanwhile, sources in Kandahar told Salam Watandar that a woman had been killed by Islamic Emirate forces in the provincial capital. The incident took place yesterday when the forces of the Islamic Emirate fired on a rickshaw at a checkpoint.

According to sources, there were three women inside the rickshaw, one of whom was killed and another injured. The driver of the rickshaw and another woman were not injured. Sources add that this incident took place in Chaharsoo Square, Kandahar city.

Kandahar security officials also confirmed the incident, but they did not give details.

Meanwhile, a number of journalists in Kandahar say they face serious threats during media coverage. A number of media officials have also complained that the officials of the Islamic Emirate have repeatedly demanded to broadcast only news and reports from these media outlets of their choice.

A number of journalists in Kandahar have recently launched a campaign on social media, posting pictures demanding freedom of expression.
