Analysts see polls, Jirga pivotal to earn international legitimacy

KABUL (SW) – Analysts believe it is pivotal for the Islamic Emirate to orchestrate elections or the traditional Loya Jirga (council of elders) to earn international legitimacy.

Recently, a number of politicians have called for the formation of a Loya Jirga or a council for the legitimacy of the Islamic Emirate, or for it to gain more legitimacy through elections.

Abdul Haq Hammad, a political analyst, said that although the current system has a domestic legitimacy, a Loya Jirga or something similar should be held to earn it more legitimacy and resolve some issues.

According to him, the authorities of the Islamic Emirate have been working for several weeks now, including with representatives of villages, districts and provincial centers, including religious scholars, experts and politicians who are not accused of corruption, to formed a grand council to discuss important and national issues.

According to him, it is possible that such a council will be officially formed soon.

“The council I am referring to will be the first council that will serve as a bridge between the people and the government, and will address the major issues that the international community is pushing for, such as internal legitimacy”, he said.

The analysts added this will lead to the formation of other councils, such as the ‘Mashrano Jirga’ (upper house), the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) and the provincial councils, and it will act as a representative between the people and the government.

Abdul Haq Hammad also sees the election as a way forward, but stressed that in the current context of Afghanistan, technically and financially, the circumstances are not feasible.

Meanwhile, Mirbat Khan Mangal, another political analyst, said that a ‘Loya Jirga’ should be convened to address the domestic legitimacy of the system of governance and to remove the excuses of foreigners in this regard causing all the economic and other problems.

Meanwhile, the Deputy Spokesman of the Islamic Emirate, Bilal Karimi, said that the existing system of governance has gained general and full domestic legitimacy and the entire nation trusts it.

He said efforts are being made to strengthen the system and there has been no official word on an election or a Loya Jirga so far.

“The Islamic Emirate will continue its efforts to develop and strengthen the system for the protection of Islamic values, taking into account the national interests of the country, and will do everything in its power to do so”, Karimi told Salam Wtandar.

It is noteworthy that the issue of earning legitimacy for the existing system of governance, the convening of elections or Loya Jirgas ave also been demanded at the international level.

Recently, former Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Abdullah Abdullah, the head of the defunct National Reconciliation Council recently sent a letter to the officials of the Islamic Emirate regarding the establishment of such a body.
