Street vendors faced with ‘humanitarian catastrophe’ in Maimana

MAIMANA (SW) – A number of street vendors in Maimana, the capital of Faryab province say they are faced with a humanitarian catastrophe amid lack of jobs and income.

A number of such vendors expressed concerns about the surging inflation are called for immediate action by officials of the Islamic Emirate.

Gul Mohammad, a street vendors in the city of Maimana, said he is faced with an eminent death in the current situation and the rising rates of basic commodities. He complained about the lack of work and extreme poverty, saying that the situation of the people is worrying as many do not have even a plain bread to eat.

Saifullah, a pushcart laborer, says he works from morning till night, but cannot find money for plain bread. He says that the Islamic Emirate cannot rule over the country in this way and must solve the existing problems.

Qudratullah, an old man who used to live his life by working with his pushcart, said that with the high cost of food items, he can no longer manage to support his family. He says he and his family will perish if he is not taken care of.

Meanwhile, Mohammad Ibrahim, a businessman in the city of Maimana, says that their only hope was the current government. He, however, added that the officials of the Islamic Emirate have explicitly stated that they should not expect help from the government and ask God, which has worried many laborers.

These concerns come at a time when the afghani currency is depreciating against the dollar, and the price of raw materials has risen dramatically.

On the other hand, Mawlana Assadollah Waqas, head of the Faryab Disaster Management Authority, says that they are doing everything in their power to help the needy. According to Waqas, in the future, with the cooperation of aid agencies, they will implement programs to help the needy.
