Limits on transactions irk cash-strapped Afghans

KABUL (SW) – Most of the financial institutions resumed operations on Monday, but limit on amount of transactions and huge crowd of customers continued to cause concerns.

In conversation with Salam Watandar, a number of anxious citizens eager to withdraw cash said that so far only the central branches of the banks have opened and the closure of the branches has left them waiting for days to receive money.

They complained that the restrictions on the amount of money to be withdrawn have made it difficult for them to withdraw much-needed cash.

They said that due to the non-opening of bank branches in the provinces, many citizens have come to Kabul to withdraw money.

According to them, large crowds lined up outside the banks on Monday, but each subscriber was paid only 20,000 afghanis, or $ 200 per transaction.

The Bankers’ Union blames the closure of a number of banks for technical problems and said efforts are being made to open all banks on Tuesday.

Najib Amiri, president of the Union of Banks, emphasized that the issue of limit on the amount that can be withdrawn will be solved in the coming days.

Following the Taliban takeover of government in Kabul, Mullah Abdul Qadir, the head of the Central Bank, Da Afghanistan Bank, asked bank officials about resuming banking activities as he assured security and finding solutions to overcome problems.

The head of the Central Bank assured in a meeting with bankers that the restrictions are temporary and that the normal operation of the banks will begin gradually.
