Farah governor along with security forces ‘surrender’ to Taliban

FARAH CITY (SW) – The governor of Farah province and mayor of Farah city have been blamed by the local MP for surrendering to the Taliban with dozens of security forces.

Homayoun Shaheed Zada, a Farah MP, told Salam Watandar that the only army brigade in the province, which had been under siege by the Taliban for two days, surrendered last night with the surrender of Farah governor Massoud Bakhtor and the mayor with about 100 security forces.

With this, the province fell to the Taliban.

The MP said that Abdul Sattar Hosseini, Farah MP, General Abdul Samad Shams, Commander of the 2nd Army Brigade in Farah, Dadullah Qaneh, Chairman of the Provincial Council as well as other key officials with a convoy of about 1,500 security forces and 200 tanks and Humvees as well as light and heavy weapons have retreated to an area outside the city of Farah.

The Farah MP added that since last night, the convoy of officials and security forces were supported by the air force. He added that the convoy was equipped with all the military equipment and could defend itself without air assistance.

According to him, the convoy of security forces and local officials changed their position with all military facilities and equipment under the guidance of top officials.

He rejected reports about the officials’ convoy taking refuge in Iran. He stressed the security forces will soon begin their operations to retake the lost areas of Farah.
