Floods sweep away entire village in Nuristan, 65 people killed

PARUN (SW) – At least 65 people lost their lives and many more went missing when flash floods swept an entire village in Nuristan province, said officials.

Hafiz Abdul Qayum, the governor of Nuristan, said that following a torrential downpour in the village of Mirdish in the Kamdish district of the province, locals had found 65 bodies so far and another 300 people, including women and children, were missing.

Kamdish is a mountainous district in eastern Nuristan.

Qayum said that this was not a final statistic and that a search was underway for the survivors. The flood came after heavy rains. Many livestock have also perished as a result of the floods.

The governor added that the village of Mirdish was under Taliban control and that the government could not send aid and rescue teams to the village. But, according to him, if the road is opened, the local administration of Nuristan is ready to send the rescue team.

Saadullah Payendehzoy, head of the Nuristan Provincial Council, said the village of Mirdish was swept away by the floods.
