Armed Junbish party activists warn to close down Maymana airport

MAINAMA (SW) – The armed Junbish party activists in Faryab province on Wednesday warned not to allow any plane land in Maymana city.

The protests of the supporters of the Junbish-e-Islami party entered its fifth day on Wednesday. Protesters said their demands have not yet been met by the government in regard to the appointment of Mohammad Dawood as designated governor for Faryab.

On the fifth day of their protests, protesters issued stern warnings to the government, saying they would not allow any planes to land or take off in the province.

Ehsanullah Qawanch, head of the Junbish party’s youth wing, said a number of MPs wished to come to Maymana from Mazar-e-Sharif to join the protesters, but were not allowed to fly by the government. According to him, that is why they are going to Maymana airport and would not allow any plane to land in this city.

He added an official delegation set to visit Maymana for conducting university entrance examination would not be allowed to enter the city.

Hamidullah Kheirandish, another activist of the Junbish party, in Kabul has said in a social media post that land routes to Maymana are closed by the Taliban and air routes by the government.

The armed supporters of Junbish party in Maymana on Wednesday carried flags of Turkestan.

The situation in Faryab escalated when Junbish party’s leader Marshal Abdul Rashid Dostum expressed opposition towards appointment of Mohammad Dawood as governor of Faryab.

This situation has also raised concerns among Maymana residents.

Sayed Zinuddin Abedi, head of Faryab Civil Society, said the government should respond to the legitimate demands of the people and not disrupt the relative peace in the province. He also called on the protesters to proceed peacefully and allow the provincial administration compound to open and deliver services.

Meanwhile, Rahmatullah Turkestani, chairman of the Faryab People’s Council, has convened a meeting and called on the government and protesters not to cause more concern to the people and to resolve their problems through understanding.

On the other hand, Mohammad Dawood, the governor of Faryab, who took charge in a military facility earlier this week, released a video statement to assure the people of Faryab that he has come to serve the province and wants to provide security and services across the province.
