Afghanistan’s largest flour mill faced with existential crisis

KUNDUZ CITY (SW) – A recently set-up biggest wheat flour mill of the country in Kunduz province is faced with existential crisis.

The management of the ‘Tahsin Wali’ flour mill said the operations here have been on hold for a year now due to a shortage of wheat, rising electricity prices and the government’s negligence. It warned, if the government failed to address these problems, 500 workers of this factory will be unemployed.

Shafiullah Fatih, manager of the mill, said millions of dollars have been invested in this project, but it seemed the factory was going bankrupt. “Instead of importing flour from Kazakhstan, the government should import wheat so that we can reactivate the factory with that,” Fatih added.

Mohammad Heeran, technical manager of mill, said up to AFN 6 million are paid to workers, and from now on the owners are compelled to sack the laborers.

Workers at the flour mill too are urging the government to pay attention to the factory’s technical problems and raw material supply so that they do not become unemployed.

On the other hand, Esmatullah Moradi, spokesman for the governor of Kunduz, said that last year there was shortage of wheat due to the challenges of the coronavirus, and therefore the flour mill also faced problems.

According to the spokesman for the governor of Kunduz, the government has a plan to solve the wheat problems of the factory this year.

The ‘Tahsin Wali’ flour mill, was built at a cost of $ 10 million by a national businessman in Kunduz three years ago.
