President Ghani eyeing to strengthen domestic front

KABUL (SW) – After a gap of nearly two years, President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani met at the presidency with his former deputy Marshal Abdul Rasheed Dostum.

Analysts believe efforts are underway to mend ties of the President with the former Balkh governor Atta Mohammad Noor and the Jamiat-e-Islami chief Salahuddin Rabbani as well. These efforts are dubbed as part of the moves to strengthen domestic political front in the wake of the peace talks with the Taliban.

University professor Akram Arifi said the President is under pressure not only from domestic political groups, but the international community to broaden the power circle and strengthen the domestic front. He said the political figures have bitter experiences of ties with the President, and are having ‘tactical’ meetings with him.

International affairs expert, Hameed Azizi said the groups and parties that have bitter enmity with the Taliban might gather under President Ghani. He said President Ghani might succeed in attracting certain figures in his camp.

It is worth noticing that the US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in a letter to President Ghani called for a more inclusive and credible approach by the Afghan government to the negotiations with the Taliban on governance and power-sharing.
