Safi says agreement reached on raising teachers’ salaries

KABUL (SW) – Mir Afghan Safi, chairman of the Wolesi Jirga’s (lower house) and Budget Committee, said on Wednesday an agreement has been reached with the government to increase the salaries of teachers and low-level government employees.

He said according to the agreement reached between the members of the Finance and Budget Commission of the house and the Minister of Finance, the amount of AFN 2000 per month will be raised from the beginning of spring in the salaries of teachers and lower-level government employees.

Safi wrote on Facebook today that the increase in teachers’ salaries and low-level government employees is a step forward in approving the budget.

Two days ago, the head of the Ministry of Finance, Mohammad Khalid Payenda, also said that the salaries of teachers and low-ranking civilian government employees would increase significantly in the fiscal year.

Earlier, WJ demanded to standardize the salaries of government employees and called on the government to incorporate it in the budget plan. In this plan, it is also proposed to streamline government spending via various codes. The plan also calls for lowering the salaries of the highly paid officials.

On the other hand, the debate on the third draft of the national budget for the fiscal year 1400 in today’s session of the house ended in vain due to the lack of quorum. Mir Rehman Rahmani, the speaker, postponed the voting to next week.
