Customs revenue in Paktia drop by half

GARDEZ (SW) – The revenue at customs in Paktia province has dropped by half, governor Mohammad Halim Fadaey said on Monday.

Addressing a press conference in connection with the government’s accountability drive program, he accused the heads of various provincial departments of incompetence, and urged them to resign.

The governor of Paktia, without naming anyone or any department, said that some offices and individuals are not providing any services to the people.

Regarding the customs revenue of the province, Fadaey said that the department has failed to meet the target set by the Ministry of Finance. According to him, the Ministry of Finance had set a target of AFN 1.6 billion for the province’s customs last fiscal year, but it has only achieved half of that target.

The governor of Paktia cited the lack of management and the spread of the coronavirus as the main reasons for the decrease in the province’s customs revenue. He called for fundamental changes in the province’s customs.

A number of Paktia residents have blamed administrative corruption as a factor behind fall in in customs’ revenue, and called on the government to take practical steps to ensure transparency in the country’s customs.
