Peace brokers to depart for Doha on Tuesday

KABUL (SW) – The government’s peace brokers would depart for Doha on Tuesday to take part in the intra-Afghan negotiations, officials said on Monday.

Though, the delegation was scheduled to leave on Monday, but the State Ministry for Peace Affairs announced the flight to the Qatari capital would depart on Tuesday.

The spokesperson for the SMPA, Najia Anwari, said the government’s peace brokers are all set to resume the intra-Afghan talks on time. In a statement, she said the members of the government’s negotiating team had returned from Qatar last month for consultations with the officials and public in connection with the peace process.

A day earlier, Habiba Sarabi, a member of the Afghan government’s peace delegation, told Salam Watandar that it was not yet clear whether the delegation would travel to Doha, Qatar, on Monday to begin the second round of peace talks with the Taliban. She said the delegation might not travel to Qatar as per schedule on Monday.

According to Habiba Sarabi, the delegation would hold a meeting with President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani before leaving for Doha.

Meanwhile, the Taliban spokesman Mohammad Naeem told Salam Watandar that their delegation was ready in Qatar and that they were fully prepared to start the second round of peace talks on as per schedule on Tuesday, January 5.

This comes amid escalating violence across the country with a number of civil society activists falling prey to a string of targeted assasinations.
