Danish underlines need to reform constitution

KABUL (SW) – Second Vice President Sarwar Danish on Tuesday underlined the need for constitutional amendments and revisions.

Speaking on the occasion of the “17th anniversary of the adoption of the Afghan Constitution”, VP Danesh said that the constitution is the key to the survival of the country’s political system and democracy. He added that without preserving the constitution, the achievements of the last several years would face the challenge of collapse.

Danesh said the constitution does have some shortcomings and does not entirely meet the needs of the present time. The second vice president said that the ambiguity in a number of clauses of the constitution has caused problems among different pillars of the state.

Speaking on the occasion, Mohammad Salem Izdiar, the deputy speaker of the Masharano Jirga (upper house), said violations of the constitutions, mainly from the presidential palace and from bodies tasked to overseeing the implementation of the constitution, remain a concern in this connection.

On the other hand, Abdullah Shafaei, head of the Independent Commission for Monitoring the Implementation of the Constitution, criticized the government’s lack of support for the implementation of the constitution. He said that the government’s lack of support for the implementation of the constitution has harmed the governance and the republic.
