Andarabi says Taliban gearing up for fresh annual offensives

KABUL (SW) – Interior minister Massound Andarabi claimed on Monday the Taliban are gearing-up for the next year’s spring offensives.

He said this addressing the Wolesi Jirga (lower house) in connection with the deteriorating security situation in the country. Andarabi said the security forces were fully prepared to fight the Taliban.

The Interior Minister added new units of combined forces from the army, police and NDS would be established nationwide to repulse the Taliban assaults. He added pilot phase of this offensive unit has been launched in Farah province and this unit can take action against Taliban attacks in any part of the country.

According to him, this operational unit is designed to target the enemy and operate under one command. The interior minister blamed the Taliban for spreading fears among public with targeted assassinations.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Zia Siraj, director general of the National Directorate of Security (NDS), said the Taliban leadership was waiting for the withdrawal of foreign troops by May 1, 2021. He said the Taliban were trying to delay the peace process. According to Siraj, the Taliban are trying to pave the way for the transfer of their leadership and military commanders from Pakistan to the country by escalating war and violence.

The director of the NDS added the Taliban wanted to undermine trust between the government and the people with surging terrorist attacks.

It is important to note the Taliban have rejected involvement in targeted assassinations.
