Eight killed as multiple rockets hit Kabul

KABUL (SW) – At least eight people lost their lives as multiple rocket attacks rocked Kabul on Saturday, officials confirmed.

Interior Ministry spokesman Tariq Arian said in a statement a total of 23 rockets were fired in the attacks. He confirmed eight people lost their lives and 31 others got injured.

There has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack. The Taliban denied any involvement in the attack.

The attacks causing widespread fears have been widely condemned. President Mohammad Ashraf Ghani while condemning the attacks said the counter-terrorism strategy, which was recently backed by the United Nations Security Council, would help reaching a political settlement and peace.

The attacks were also condemned by the US, European Union, Turkey, India, China and Pakistan.

“The rocket attacks targeting common & innocent people in central parts of Kabul this morning is a horrendous act & violation of International Humanitarian Law, which we strongly condemn. We stand with the people of Afghanistan longing for peace & a daily life without violence”, said the EU in a statement.

Ross Wilson, the US Chargé d’Affaires to Afghanistan, has stressed Afghans should not have to live in terror. “My condolences to the victims and those families of those killed and wounded. The United States will continue to work with our Afghan partners to prevent such attacks and hold their perpetrators to account”, he said in a statement.

Ambassador Stefano Pontecorvo, the Kabul-based NATO Senior Civilian Representative to Afghanistan, said in this connection that the Afghans’ call for peace is tragically met with renewed violence. “This morning we saw new cowardly attacks across Kabul. My thoughts go to the families of the victims. #NATO stands with Afghans in their fight against terrorism & for peace”, he tweeted.
