MONITORING (SW) – The United Nations Security Council is set to vote on a draft resolution regarding the extension of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) mandate in the country.
In a report issued on Saturday, the Council stated that if the UNAMA mission is extended, it will continue until March 17, 2026.
The Security Council emphasized that the mission’s priorities and tasks will remain unchanged upon extension.
The draft resolution includes issues related to human rights, particularly women’s rights, economic conditions, peace and security, combating terrorism, drug trafficking, and refugees.
The Security Council added that it is expected all 15 permanent and non-permanent members of the Council will support the resolution.
This comes after over a month of intense disagreements among the United States, France, China, and Russia—the four permanent members of the Security Council—regarding the preparation of the draft for UNAMA’s extension in Afghanistan.
Previously, Zabihullah Mujahid, spokesperson for the Islamic Emirate, said that UNAMA has not had a successful mission in Afghanistan.
Mujahid added that the mission has created a “misleading” image of Afghanistan by disseminating negative reports about the country.
