Italy contributes €3.5 million to aid Afghan returnees

MONITORING (SW) – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) office in Afghanistan has announced that Italy has donated €3.5 million to assist with the needs of Afghan returnees.

In a statement published on its website on Wednesday, the organization stated that these funds would be allocated to support individuals returning from Iran and Pakistan.

The IOM added that the donation will assist 25,000 returnees in Afghanistan over the course of a year.

Support will be provided through eight reception and transit centers at border crossings between Afghanistan and its neighboring countries, Iran and Pakistan.

The IOM emphasized that both Iran and Pakistan are expected to intensify the deportation of Afghan migrants in the current year.

Last year, the IOM reported registering 1.3 million returnees to Afghanistan, with 67% of them forcibly expelled from their host countries.
