Over 500 Afghan children killed, injured by explosive remnants in 2024

The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Afghanistan has said that over 500 children were killed or injured in 2024, due to landmines and unexploded ordnance left behind from the war.

In a statement released on Sunday, January 5th, UNICEF reported that in the past year, they provided education on the dangers of unexploded ordnance to three million children.

Afghanistan is one of the most heavily contaminated countries in the world by remnants of war, and civilians, particularly children, continue to be its victims.

Previously, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) had stated that more than 1,000 square kilometers of Afghan territory are contaminated with war remnants, including landmines.
