Islamic Emirate asks Iran for alternatives to executions of Afghan prisoners

During a visit to Iran, a delegation from the Islamic Emirate, led by Abdul Malik Haqqani, the Administrative Deputy of the Supreme Court, asked Iranian officials for alternatives to the executions of Afghan prisoners.

The delegation met with Kazem Gharibabadi, Deputy for International and Human Rights Affairs of Iran’s Judiciary, to discuss the matter.

Abdul Rahim Rashed, Head of Foreign Relations, Public Affairs, and Media at the de-facto government’s Supreme Court, stated that during this meeting, the officials requested Iranian officials share a list of Afghan prisoners in Iran, particularly those sentenced to death. According to him, Haqqani also urged Iranian authorities to consider alternative measures to prevent the execution of Afghan prisoners.

“During the meeting, they discussed strengthening judicial cooperation and the issue of Afghan prisoners sentenced to death. Iran was urged to show leniency towards Afghan prisoners under Islamic fraternity and seek alternatives to the death penalty.”

Haqqani also emphasized the rights of Afghan migrants in Iran, stressing that they should have access to education, employment, and other rights, and that they must be protected from arbitrary detention and mistreatment without trial.

According to the Supreme Court, the Deputy for International and Human Rights Affairs of Iran’s Judiciary has stated that 1,500 Afghan prisoners will be transferred to Afghanistan in the near future. Previously, the Iran Human Rights Organization reported that in the first 10 months of 2024, Iran executed 49 Afghan citizens.
