Iran’s President, Masoud Pezeshkian, has stated that his country will engage in talks with Afghanistan’s de-facto government regarding the Helmand River water rights.
Iranian media reported on Friday, January 10, that Pezeshkian made these comments during his visit to the Sistan and Baluchestan province.
He added that a team from Iran’s Ministry of Energy would soon travel to Afghanistan to discuss the Helmand water issue with the Islamic Emirate officials.
Pezeshkian emphasized that efforts are ongoing to resolve this issue and noted that Sistan and Baluchestan, with its access to the ocean, could offer a golden opportunity for Afghanistan and Pakistan.
The President also reiterated that all three countries should make good use of this opportunity.
Since the return of the Islamic Emirate to power in Afghanistan, while Iran has maintained generally positive relations with the regime, tensions have occasionally arisen over the Helmand water dispute.
