Afghan prisoner released from U.S. and transferred to Afghanistan

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Islamic Emirate has announced that Khan Mohammad, an Afghan prisoner in the United States, has been released and transferred to Afghanistan.

Zia Ahmad Takal, deputy spokesperson for the ministry, wrote in a statement on Tuesday, January 21, that the Afghan citizen was freed after extended negotiations with the U.S. in exchange for the release of American citizens.

The statement reads: “The Islamic Emirate considers this exchange a positive example of resolving issues through dialogue; it views U.S. actions that contribute to the normalization and development of relations between the two countries positively.”

The ministry further mentioned that the Afghan citizen had been detained nearly two decades ago in Nangarhar and had been sentenced to life imprisonment by U.S. courts.

According to the ministry, the Afghan national had been serving his sentence in California, United States of America.
