KABUL (SW) – Roza Otunbayeva, head of the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), has stated that the third Doha conference is a “vital mechanism” for addressing Afghanistan’s issues.
During her briefing on the situation in Afghanistan at the United Nations Security Council meeting, Otunbayeva emphasized the importance of the Islamic Emirate’s participation in this meeting.
She noted that engaging with the Islamic Emirate is a means to encourage policies that could pave the way for Afghanistan’s reintegration into the global community.
“This type of engagement is not about legitimizing or normalizing the situation. Only engagement from a unified, coordinated, and principled international stance can provide strong incentives for the current authorities to adopt policies that enable their reintegration into the international community,” she said.
The UNAMA chief stressed that resolving the issues between Afghanistan and the global community requires all parties to commit to the points outlined in independent assessments regarding Afghanistan.
The UN Security Council meeting, held on Friday, to review the situation in Afghanistan and its implications for global peace and security, also featured a report by UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who presented his quarterly update on Afghanistan.
