MONITORING (SW) – In the past two days, China hosted Russian President Vladimir Putin for discussions on bilateral relations and various regional and global issues.
Following this visit, a joint statement from the Grand Kremlin Palace indicated that Afghanistan was among the topics discussed by the leaders of these two global powers.
The joint statement emphasized that the 20-year occupation of Afghanistan by the United States and NATO caused significant economic and social problems in the country. Consequently, Russia and China urged the US and NATO not to pursue the establishment of military bases in Afghanistan.
Part of the statement reads: “The US and NATO are responsible for the 20-year occupation of Afghanistan; therefore, they should not contemplate establishing military infrastructure in Afghanistan again. They must accept responsibility for the social and economic problems that Afghanistan is currently facing.”
These remarks by the Russian and Chinese leaders come amid ongoing disagreements and competition among global powers concerning Afghanistan.
Some experts believe that these remarks from powerful countries stem from their competitive perspectives on Afghanistan.
An expert on political affairs, Mohammad Zalmai Afghanyar Popal, told Salam Watandar: “China and Russia are among the countries with veto power in the United Nations Security Council; these countries have never had plans for managing crises in countries like Afghanistan and have always been crisis-inducing for such countries.”
Simultaneously, other experts emphasize that to prevent military interventions in Afghanistan by other countries; the current government in Afghanistan must address internal problems and seek to establish political stability.
Aziz Stanekzai, a security and political affairs expert, said, “Issues within the country must be resolved. If there is public dissatisfaction, any government that does not address the people’s demands will face problems. In order to avoid problems, people’s wishes should be taken into account and they should not be deprived of their legal rights.
This discussion comes in the context of earlier remarks by former US President Donald Trump. During an election rally on November of 2023, Trump, a current presidential candidate, mentioned that if he wins the election, he plans to regain control of the Bagram military base in cooperation with the Islamic Emirate.
