Uzbekistan to address growing energy demand with shift towards renewables, says Mirziyoyev

UZBEKISTAN (SW) – Uzbekistan plans to cover growing need in electricity primarily through renewable energy, President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev said.

The remark was made during the solemn ceremony of commissioning and connection to the grid of five solar plants and one wind power plant in six regions of Uzbekistan jointly with international partners such as Emirati Masdar and China Energy Engineering Corporation.

Six ‘green’ power plants, with a capacity of 2.4 GWs, have commenced operations in Uzbekistan on Wednesday, December 27.

The solar power plants have been established in Jizzakh, Samarkand, Surkhandarya, Bukhara, and Kashkadarya regions, while the initial segment of the wind power plant is operational in the Tomdi district of Navoiy region. The collective capacity of these power plants is 2400 MWs of electricity.

Referring to the plans for the development of the energy industry, the president of Uzbekistan said: “The great things we are doing today are actually the next steps of reforms in the field of energy industry. We will continue these measures in a targeted manner and will gradually move towards competitive market mechanisms.”

According to the information, projects for the construction of 22 solar and wind power plants with a capacity of nine gigawatts are currently underway in Uzbekistan. Shavkat Mirziyoyev added: “We will gradually expand our production cooperation with foreign companies.”

The capacity of ‘green’ energy resources is expected to increase to 27 GWs by 2030. This expansion aims to save 25 billion cubic meters of natural gas and reduce 34 million tons of harmful emissions in the Earth’s atmosphere.
