Solar power centers for women’s workshops in Balkh

MAZAR-E-SHARIF (SW) – Local officials in Balkh say that solar power system has been established for 15 women’s workshops in this province.

This solar electricity supply system was created with the support of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) at a cost of about 225,000 US dollars to solve the electricity problems in the workshops.

Vahibal Irani, the provincial official of the United Nations Development Program in Balkh, says that the purpose of creating a solar power system in these workshops is to increase work and support women entrepreneurs in this province. He adds: “The small businesses created are an important sector that, in addition to women’s self-sufficiency, have provided work opportunities to other women and girls, and we always support it.”

Meanwhile, a number of women entrepreneurs in Balkh say that although after the ban on women’s work, the activity of women’s sewing workshops and factories has increased in this province, but they need more support.

Officials of the workshops that have benefited from the solar power system say that this action is beneficial for their activities.

They add that before the establishment of the solar power system, they used to pay more than 20,000 afghanis per month for electricity.

On the other hand, a number of women who have been provided with work opportunities in production workshops, from other domestic and foreign institutions, want to create more job opportunities for women by supporting production workshops.
