Afghan and Pakistani forces exchange fire at Chaman crossing

KABUL (SW) – The local authorities of Kandahar say that Pakistani border guards initiated the exchange of fire at the Spinboldak-Chaman crossing point on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, Pakistan’s border forces and Islamic Emirate forces opened fire on each other at the Spinboldak-Chaman crossing point, as a result of which a number of civilians were killed and injured on both sides.

Mahmoud Azzam, the spokesman of Kandahar governor, told Salam Watandar that the investigation into the cause of this conflict has started and efforts are being made to prevent the recurrence of such events in the future. He added: “It was a small incident and two or three civilians were injured and there were casualties on the other side as well. Now the situation is back to normal.”

Yesterday, the Pakistan Army issued a statement saying that a border guard of the Islamic Emirate shot dead two people, including a 12-year-old boy, at the Spinboldak-Chaman crossing. In this announcement, it is stated that the border forces of Pakistan have exercised excessive patience in order to avoid more casualties during the firing.

The Pakistani army called this event irresponsible and asked the authorities of the Islamic Emirate to hand over the perpetrators to Pakistan.

A number of political experts say that the continuation of these conflicts will increase the tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Syed Shafiqullah Sadat, expert on political issues, said that the bilateral problems between Afghanistan and Pakistan should be resolved through diplomatic means. He added: “There are several reasons. Sometimes the wrong treatment of Pakistani border forces with Afghans causes the sense of aggression to cause conflict, and sometimes because the border is not recognized, it creates problems that must be solved diplomatically.”

It should be mentioned that 20 days ago, the border forces of Pakistan and the forces of the Islamic Emirate clashed at the Torkham crossing, as a result of which this crossing was closed to traffic by Pakistan for nine days.
