Western zone residents irked by power supply issues with Iran

HERAT CITY (SW) – A number of residents of Herat, Farah and Nimroz provinces are complaining about the excessive electricity imported from Iran and say that they do not have electricity for more than several hours during a day and night.

Shah Mohammad Samadi, a resident of Farah, and Salim, a resident of Nimroz, shared their concerns about power shortages in these provinces.

Shah Mohammad Samadi said: “Electricity shortage is more in Farah and its people do not have access to electricity even for an hour. We ask the Islamic Emirate to pay attention to the Bakhshabad Dam to provide electricity to the residents of Farah.”

Salim said: “The electricity goes out twice a day and our work remains impacted. We cannot afford a generator and we ask the Islamic Emirate to take care of our electricity problems.”

Meanwhile, Hamidullah Khadim, the head of the Herat Chamber of Industries and Mines, says that in this province, electricity imported from Iran is cut several times in a week, and this issue has caused dozens of industrial companies to see financial losses of more than 100,000 dollars.

The head of the Herat Chamber of Industries and Mines added: “The power supply is cut several times a week by Iran, and every time we face losses of hundreds of thousands of dollars.”

However, officials at the power utility, Da Afghanistan Brashna Sherkat (DABS) say that efforts are underway to solve the problem of lack of electricity in the western part of the country.

Hekmatullah Meyvandi, the spokesman of the DABS, said: “Herat zone needs 171 megawatts of electricity, which will be 100% ensured.”

However, according to the officials of the Ministry of Energy and Water, a delegation of the Islamic Emirate is going to travel to Iran to deal with the problems of electricity in the western region.
