Visually impaired women in Faryab feel neglected

MAIMANA (SW) – A number of visually impaired women in the city of Maimena, the center of Faryab, complained about the lack of jobs and professional activities in this province and said that unemployment and poverty have caused them to be in an unfortunate economic situation.

They want government and non-government organizations to provide them with wor, educational and professional activities.

Munira, one of the visually impaired people in Faryab, expressed concern about the economic situation of disabled people and said that the government and aid organizations do not help the disabled and they are struggling with many problems.

She added: “Our life is very difficult. My father is disabled and sits at home unemployed. Only my mother weaves carpets and earns her living.”

15-year-old Rokhsar, who is visually impaired with her mother and brother, said: “We are blind, we have many economic problems. We ask the government to provide us with educational and professional programs so that we can learn something so that our hands are not extended to the people and we can lead our lives.”

Meanwhile, Khalbibi Hamnava, another visually impaired person who is in charge of the capacity building and rehabilitation institute for the blind and disabled in Faryab, said that due to the current situation, women cannot share their problems with the authorities.

She added: “One problem we have is women are not allowed to go to the governorate to tell about their pain and the pain of the all disabled. We also go to the offices, those in the offices say that we don’t have plans now, we will let you know when we have plans.”

According to Khalbibi, 162 disabled women are registered with her, of which 45 are blind and are in a bad economic situation.

However, Rehanuddin Mutawakkul, head of work and social affairs department in Faryab, also confirms the economic problems of the visually impaired women and people with disabilities in this province, but he says that they are trying to provide employment and professional training for blind and disabled people in coordination with relevant institutions.

He added: “We are sharing this problem with the officials of the relevant departments and we are trying to solve the problems of people with disabilities and poor people with their coordination and provide them with more opportunities for employment. We are also talking with partner offices about creating professional courses.”
