KABUL (SW) – The city of Gardiz, the center of Paktia and the districts of Laja Mangal and Rouhani Baba of this province are among the areas where the recent floods have severely damaged the residents.

Flood victims in these districts say that the floods have destroyed agricultural lands, residential houses, roads, springs and drinking water wells and have faced them with serious problems.

Nawab Khan, a resident of Laja Mangal district, told Salam Watandar: “The flood has caused a lot of damage to the residents of our area. Land, houses and roads are all destroyed. We are facing many problems.”

Khyaluddin, another resident of Leja Mangal district, said: “The lands have been damaged a lot. Onions, wheat and everything else is spoiled because floods came from all sides and caused a lot of damage. People have been injured.”

Tajmir and Nur Mohammad, two residents of Gardiz city, said that the flood damaged their houses, but no aid institution has helped them so far. They added that their economic situation is not good and they cannot rebuild their residential houses and agricultural lands without the help of institutions.

Tajmir said: “The floods caused us a lot of damage, but nothing helped. It destroyed the houses. We ask the aid institutions not to reduce their aid, people are not able to rebuild their houses on their own.”

Noor Mohammad said: “We are very poor, our economy is also weak, we have nothing left. The aid institutions must help us, otherwise we have nothing. We hope and ask aid institutions, the government and the Islamic Emirate to cooperate.”

Meanwhile, Nisar Ahmed Nejat, head of natural disasters management authority in Paktia, said that in the past two weeks, floods have destroyed more than 30 houses in Laja Mangal and Rohani Baba districts, and damaged some shops, a school building and a religious school.

He added that the aid institutions that were helping the victims in the past few months have now stopped their activities. He cited the ban on women’s work as the reason for stopping the work of these institutions.

Nisar Ahmad Nejat said: “The assistance of the institutes has become very weak compared to last year, and in the current natural events, many houses have been damaged in Leja Mangal and Rouhani Baba districts, and farmers have suffered losses. The institutes have stopped their survey teams and other activities and made it a political issue that the government does not allow the women’s team.”
